Brightness depends on power source

Before replacing a webcam, I would look at the light. A bright window behind the screen and a ceiling light above your head can make a perfectly ordinary video call harder to set up than it needs to be.

The Elgato Key Light Neo is on my research list for a small work-from-home desk. I have not measured its output, flicker, colour accuracy or heat, and I have not tried its monitor mount.

What makes it interesting

Elgato lists onboard controls, a monitor mount and a 2900–7000K colour-temperature range. Its listed brightness depends on the power source: 400 lumens with USB-A, 700 with USB-C, and up to 1000 with a suitable 3A supply.

For me, the attraction is having a light that is easy to reach and adjust. I would rather make one useful adjustment at the start of a call than rearrange half the room.

Try the free fix first

Turn toward a window if the room allows it. Move a familiar lamp, check the webcam exposure, and remove a bright light from the background. If that already gives you the result you need, a new light may be unnecessary.

A dedicated light becomes more interesting when you take calls at different times of day or the desk cannot move. Decide what is inconsistent before buying something to fix it.

My pre-purchase checks

Check whether the mount suits your monitor and whether the power connection can support the output you want. A hub or dock is not automatically equivalent to a dedicated power supply.

I would test the light at my usual distance, with glasses if I wear them, and look for reflections and distracting brightness. I would also see whether I like the onboard controls before making Wi-Fi software part of the routine.

My research verdict

A sensible candidate for a compact desk with recurring lighting problems. I would buy it for a repeatable call setup rather than an unrealistic promise about appearance. The best result is simply being easy to see and getting on with the conversation.
