There is something appealing about a device that asks you to do just one thing. Open a book. Read a few pages. Let the message notifications wait somewhere else.

The Kobo Clara Colour is on my research shortlist for that kind of routine. I have not read on this model, so this is a feature-based consideration rather than a screen-quality or battery test.

What I like about the idea

Kobo lists a 6-inch Kaleido 3 colour E Ink screen, 16GB of storage and an adjustable front light with ComfortLight PRO. Black-and-white content is listed at 300ppi; colour content at 150ppi. The device does not support the Kobo Stylus.

The interesting part for me is the dedicated reading space. A smaller screen may fit a travel routine more easily, while a front light lets you adjust the setup to the room rather than keep turning on an overhead lamp.

Start with your books

Before choosing an e-reader, make a list of the books you actually want to read. Check availability in your region, the formats of books you already own, and any library service you plan to use. A lovely device cannot make an incompatible library convenient.

Colour is worth considering if you enjoy covers and highlighted passages. I would not buy it expecting the rich colours or fast interaction of a tablet. If most of your reading is plain text, compare the black-and-white alternative before deciding.

The questions I would test

I would check text size, page turns, screen contrast and how the reader feels in one hand. I would also open a sample of my own reading material. A short novel and a large-format PDF make very different demands on a small display.

For evening reading, I would adjust the front light and see what feels comfortable. A product's warm-light feature is not a promise about sleep or eye health.

My research verdict

A considered candidate for someone who wants a dedicated, compact reading device and likes a little colour. I would choose based on book access and reading comfort before matching a cover to my bag. The little ritual is the reason to buy; the pretty cover can come later.
